Travel Training
San Joaquin Regional Transit District (RTD) now offers Travel Training for Stockton residents. The Travel Training program, funded through a Job Access Reverse Commute (JARC) 5317 federal grant, offers one-on-one instruction on how to use fixed route public transportation. It can provide participants with travel independence and increase their mobility options by using RTD’s regular fixed-route bus services.
RTD is collaborating with Paratransit, Inc., the national leader in Mobility/Travel Training, to bring their 30 years of travel training experience in Stockton.
Travel Training teaches participants to travel independently to specific destinations, maneuver mobility aids on and off RTD buses, identify landmarks, and travel to and from bus stops. The program uses a series of gradual steps to build confidence and ensure independence, starting with hand-on, one-on-one instruction, and gradually reducing assistance as the participant’s skills develop.
To comply with funding requirements, RTD limits Travel Training eligibility to individuals who meet the following criteria:
- Must be a Stockton resident (one of the funding limitations)
- Must be going to work, actively seeking employment, or desire gainful employment
- Must be attending, or desire to attend, an academic institution or a program that teaches job skills.
