Fare Increase Information

RTD Board of Directors Approves Fare Increases Effective October 5, 2008
In light of the existing budget conditions, increasing operating costs, and the need for RTD to continue to comply with fare requirements to maintain its eligibility for local and federal funding, RTD is increasing fares for its Interregional services (San Joaquin Commuter routes to the Bay Area and Sacramento) and Regional services (those services RTD operates within San Joaquin County). RTD last adjusted its Interregional fares structure in November 2001, and its Regional fares in September 2004.

In June, RTD’s Board of Directors approved scheduling public hearings in Stockton and San Joaquin County to solicit public input on the proposed fare increases. After review of the proposals and hearing public comments, the board approved the fare increase for the Interregional service on July 15, 2008, and for Regional service on August 19, 2008.

Regional Bus Service

In an effort to determine the reasonableness of the fares proposed, RTD compared its interregional fares to those of the Altamont Commuter Express (ACE). With the exception of trips originating in Tracy, ACE fares to comparable destinations were $8 to $87 higher. RTD’s interregional routes travel 70 to 202 roundtrip miles per day. Driving a private vehicle (that gets 23 miles per gallon, at $4.50 per gallon) to the destinations served by RTD would cost between $273 to $791 per month in fuel alone. With new fare levels of $134 to $207 per month, RTD’s Interregional service provides a significant savings to customers when compared to the costs of driving alone.

The proposal for fare increases stemmed from a dramatic rise in fuel costs combined with a reduction in RTD's operating budget.

RTD staff has made fare comparisons for its Regional services with the fare structures of nearby transit providers. These comparisons have been available for review since before the public hearings regarding the proposed Regional Fare Increase.
